What a trip will cost in petrol or diesel, one way or return, split between passengers. Kilometres or miles.

How it works

Divide the distance by how far the car goes on one litre (or gallon) to get the fuel used, then multiply by the price. Economy given as litres per 100 km works the other way: distance × l/100 km ÷ 100. A return trip doubles the distance.

Worked example

A 300 km drive in a car that does 15 km/l, with petrol at ₹103 a litre.

  1. 1Fuel used: 300 ÷ 15 = 20 litres
  2. 2Cost: 20 × 103 = ₹2,060
  3. 3Per km: 2,060 ÷ 300 = ₹6.87

The trip costs about ₹2,060 in petrol, or ₹4,120 for the return journey.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my real mileage lower than the claimed figure?

Official figures come from a gentle lab test cycle. City traffic, air conditioning, heavy loads, roof racks, under-inflated tyres and high motorway speeds all cut real mileage, often by 10–20% and sometimes more.

How do I convert mpg to km/l?

Multiply US mpg by 0.425 to get km/l, so 30 mpg is about 12.8 km/l. To get l/100 km, divide 235.2 by US mpg. UK mpg uses a larger gallon: multiply by 0.354 for km/l.

How do I measure my own mileage?

Fill the tank, reset the trip meter, drive normally, then fill up again. Divide the distance on the trip meter by the litres it took to refill. An average over two or three fills is more reliable.
