Tip Calculator

Work out the tip and split the bill, with an option to round each share up to a whole dollar.

How it works

The tip is a percentage of the bill, usually before sales tax. Adding it to the bill and dividing by the number of people gives each share. Rounding each share up to a whole dollar makes paying in cash easy and adds a little to the tip, which the calculator shows as the effective tip percentage.

each pays = bill × (1 + tip%) ÷ people
Tip %
15–20% is standard at US sit-down restaurants
Round up
Each share goes up to the next whole dollar
Effective tip
The tip actually left, after rounding, as a share of the bill

Worked example

A $84.50 dinner bill for three people, tipping 18%.

  1. 1Tip: 84.50 × 18% = $15.21
  2. 2Total: 84.50 + 15.21 = $99.71
  3. 3Each: 99.71 ÷ 3 = $33.24
  4. 4Rounded up, each pays $34, for a $102 total

$33.24 each, or $34 each rounded up, which makes the tip $17.50, or 20.7%.

Frequently asked questions

How much should I tip?

In the US, 15–20% at a sit-down restaurant, 20% or more for excellent service or a large group. Bartenders get $1–2 a drink or 15–20%. Delivery drivers 10–15% with a few dollars minimum, and taxi or ride-share drivers 15–20%.

Should I tip on the amount before or after tax?

Etiquette guides say before tax, since tax is not part of the service. In practice many people tip on the total for simplicity. The difference on a $100 bill with 8% tax at 20% is $1.60.

What about tipping outside the US?

Customs vary widely. In much of Europe, service is included and rounding up is enough. In India, 5–10% is common where no service charge is on the bill. In Japan, tipping is generally not expected.
