Add GST to a price or take it out of an inclusive one, split into CGST and SGST or IGST at the 2025 rates.

How it works

To add GST, multiply the price before tax by the rate. To take GST out of a price that already includes it, divide by one plus the rate. Subtracting the rate from the inclusive price overstates the tax. Within a state the GST is split equally between CGST and SGST; between states it is charged as IGST.

GST = price × rate | price = inclusive ÷ (1 + rate)
CGST
Central GST, half the rate on a sale within a state
SGST / UTGST
State or union territory GST, the other half
IGST
Integrated GST, the full rate on a sale between states
Rates
5% and 18% for most goods and services, 40% for luxury and sin goods, 3% for gold

Worked example

A ₹10,000 invoice at 18% GST, sold within the same state.

  1. 1GST: 10,000 × 18% = ₹1,800
  2. 2CGST: 1,800 ÷ 2 = ₹900 at 9%
  3. 3SGST: ₹900 at 9%
  4. 4In reverse, 11,800 ÷ 1.18 = ₹10,000 before GST

The invoice total is ₹11,800: ₹10,000 plus ₹900 CGST and ₹900 SGST.

Frequently asked questions

What are the GST rates now?

Since 22 September 2025, the reform known as GST 2.0 uses two main slabs: 5% for essentials and 18% as the standard rate. A 40% rate applies to luxury and sin goods such as aerated and caffeinated drinks, large cars and motorcycles over 350cc. Gold and silver stay at 3%, rough diamonds at 0.25%, and many basics are exempt. The 12% slab is gone, and 28% plus cess survives only for tobacco and pan masala until the compensation cess ends.

How do I calculate GST from a total that includes it?

Divide the total by 1 plus the rate. At 18%, ₹11,800 ÷ 1.18 = ₹10,000, so the GST is ₹1,800. Taking 18% of ₹11,800 gives ₹2,124, which is wrong because it charges tax on the tax.

When is it IGST instead of CGST and SGST?

The place of supply decides. If the supplier and the place of supply are in the same state, the tax is split into CGST and SGST. If they are in different states, or it is an import, the full rate is charged as IGST. The total tax is the same either way.
